Bright Futures Scholarship

Bright Futures Information for Students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program

The Florida Legislature is authorized each year to change eligibility and funding requirements. Florida law recognizes both the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program Diploma and the IB curriculum as methods of qualifying for a Bright Futures Florida Academic or Medallion Scholars award. (Filing a Florida Financial Aid Application and FAFSA is required.) Senior students can begin completing their Florida Financial Aid Application to qualify for a Bright Futures scholarship on December 1 of their senior year at http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/SSFAD/home/ApplyHere.htm.
To qualify for the Florida Academic Scholars award with the IB Program Diploma:

  • Receive the IB Diploma
  • No SAT or ACT test score is required
  • Community service hours are recognized within the Diploma

To qualify for the Florida Academic Scholars award with the IB Program curriculum:

  • Complete the IB Program curriculum requirements as determined by the Florida Department of Education – No minimum coursework GPA is required
  • Meet the appropriate SAT or  ACT test score
  • Earn 100 community service hours (this requirement will be satisfied by completing the CAS portion of the IB Curriculum)

To qualify for the Florida Medallion Scholars award with the IB Program curriculum:

  • Complete the IB Program curriculum requirements as determined by the Florida Department of Education – No minimum coursework GPA is required
  • Meet the appropriate SAT or ACT test score
  • Earn 75 community service hours (this requirement will be satisfied by completing the CAS portion of the IB Curriculum)

 

The IB curriculum is defined as follows:

  • Complete a minimum of 10 credits identified by the International Baccalaureate

Organization as follows:

  • Two credits in three of the following areas, and one credit in each of the remaining three areas:

Language Arts, World Language, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics and Arts/Electives.

(Each of these credits must be an IB or AP course. Pre-IB courses do not meet IB curriculum

requirements.)

  • One credit in Theory of Knowledge.
  • Complete the Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) requirement, which includes at least 100 hours of

community service completed in grades 9-12.

  • Complete an extended essay.
